Description
The C. David Gutsche Award is a biennial award made to a senior researcher who has made significant contributions to the field of calixarenes. The awardee receives free registration at the subsequent International Conference on Calixarenes meeting, a plaque of recognition, and $5,000 to help cover expenses for participation in the conference.
The award honors David’s 55-year career in university teaching and research, and in particular his pioneering work in unraveling the puzzling and sometimes conflicting data from Adolf von Baeyer’s initial examination of the condensation of phenol and aldehydes and the subsequent work of Zinke, Niederl, Vogel and Cornforth. Solving the puzzle of these early studies, working out reliable procedures for the one-step synthesis of calixarenes, and of course naming these now famous cyclic-oligomers, was just (!) the beginning of David’s contribution to the field. Over the subsequent years, his contributions continued to expand calixarene chemistry, so much so that all of the countless researchers drawn into this fascinating area consider David a true father figure.

Nominations
Nominations/applications from researchers with an extensive and outstanding track-record in the general field of calixarene chemistry are encouraged. The evaluation committee welcomes both self-nominations and second-party nominations from other renowned scientists.
Application documentation
Applicants should submit a single pdf document comprised of: a one-page nomination letter detailing their contribution to the field, their curriculum vitae (CV), and reprints of five papers that encapsulate their contribution to calixarene chemistry and chemistry in general. Applications should be emailed to Prof. Fraser Hof at fhof@uvic.ca.
Application Deadline
The application deadline for the 6th C. David Gutsche Award is the 15th of January 2025.
Review of materials
Applications will be reviewed by three or more prominent scientists within the supramolecular and macrocyclic community selected by the advisory committee of the International Conference on Calixarenes.
